UMA is the control token of the Universal Market Access protocol, which means that it gives holders the right to vote on changes to the protocol and system updates. The protocol itself was designed to create synthetic assets based on the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain. Basically, UMA allows counterparties to digitize and automate any of even the most exotic financial derivatives from the real world, such as futures, contracts for difference (CFDs), or total return swaps. It also allows you to create self-executing digital asset derivatives like other cryptocurrencies. UMA was launched in December 2018. Hart Lambur and Allison Lu founded UMA.
