Litecoin (LTC) is a cryptocurrency that was created based on the Bitcoin protocol but with significant changes. For example, Litecoin has a different block validation algorithm. Bitcoin uses a secure hashing algorithm (SHA), while Litecoin uses a consensus algorithm called Scrypt. Litecoin also differs in the speed of block creation and the total number of tokens. LTC is called the "lite version of Bitcoin" because it has a block time of just 2.5 minutes and extremely low transaction fees, making it suitable for micro-transactions and point-of-sale payments. Litecoin was founded by Charlie Lee, who was a former software engineer for Google. Litecoin was released via an open-source client on GitHub on 7 October 2011, and the Litecoin Network went live five days later on October 13, 2011.
